Art Licensing FAQs

What is Art Licensing?

A licensing agreement that grants you permission to use my artwork on your products while I retain the copyright. Think of it as essentially "renting" the artwork. Some companies have in-house designers, while others license patterns from independent surface designers like me. Through this agreement, you can license my designs non-exclusively or exclusively (see details below) by paying a fee to use the artwork in line with our agreed terms. Surface designers typically license their work for either a flat fee or royalties, depending on the agreement.

Exclusie License

An exclusive license applies solely to your product category, ensuring your product stands out by limiting others from using the same design during the agreed term. I retain full copyright as the artist, along with the ability to license the design for other categories not included in the agreement. For example, if you hold an exclusive license for stationery, I can still license the design for different categories, such as fabric or home decor. When the licensing term ends, you will have the first option to renew. If you decide not to, the design rights will fully revert back to me.

What is a Non-Exclusive Licens?

A non-exclusive license allows you to select one of my existing designs from my portfolio to be produced by your preferred printer and sold as finished goods within a single category. This design can also be licensed to other companies simultaneously, ensuring it remains available for purchase on platforms like Spoonflower, where others can buy it printed on fabric, wallpaper, and various products. I retain full copyright of the design throughout the licensing period.
